In the 1930s and ’40s, Panerai built the instruments the Italian Navy’s frogmen carried into the dark: watches they could read underwater, worn on night missions astride the slow-speed torpedo you’ll find engraved on this watch’s caseback. The Luminor Submersible is the direct descendant of that work, and the PAM00616 is where Panerai took the story somewhere new. Unveiled at SIHH in 2015, it was the debut of Carbotech, a composite Panerai makes by pressing thin layers of long carbon fiber together with a high-tech polymer under heat and pressure. Panerai says it’s lighter and tougher than ceramic or titanium, and it won’t corrode. Because the grain depends on how each piece is cut, no two cases look alike.
On the wrist it wears lighter than a 47mm diver has any right to, and the all-matte black finish keeps it stealthy. It’s rated to 300 meters with a one-way bezel for timing dives, so take it diving, out on the boat, or to the beach without a second thought. Then wear it to dinner, where it’ll start conversations. The hour hand jumps in one-hour steps without disturbing the minutes, which makes it an easy travel companion. Add Panerai’s in-house three-day automatic and the numbered caseback, U0219/1000, and you have a genuine tool watch with a story few others can tell.
